Synopsis:
Kristi’s first identity crisis happened in her twenties, when she abandoned almost everything to find herself. She walked away from relationships, evangelical religion, an Ivy League institution and every expectation her wealthy, white, conservative, southern Republican parents had for her. She lived in an African village and an inner-city halfway house. She taught in extraordinarily under-resourced rural and urban public schools. Along the way, she encountered unexpected guides, surprising truths, rocky romances, and the authentic version of herself: a liberal, spiritual, feminist, activist, ascetic who was no longer buried under expectations and blinded by privilege.
Kristi is in the midst of her second identity crisis now. After working so hard to unearth and illuminate herself two decades ago, marriage and motherhood have left her buried and blinded again. She is buried under a mountain of midlife responsibilities, blinded by fatigue, and finding it increasingly difficult to see herself as she once was: a woman who fought for what mattered—a woman who believed she mattered—beyond any roles she occupied.
This 130K word memoir is narrated by a wife and mother of four who needs to rediscover herself and her path—but does not want to leave her young family to do it.
Fans of Cheryl Strayed and Elizabeth Gilbert will be intrigued. Is it possible for a former (but still storytelling) nomad to go on a spiritual journey without exiting the house?
Fans of Glennon Doyle will be challenged. What happens when a woman who became Untamed in her twenties finds herself domesticated now?
Fans of Robert Fulghum will be surprised. What happens when someone has to unlearn almost everything she was taught in Kindergarten, at least with regards to race, religion, politics, orientation and identity?
This book is philosophical, political and personal. It is the tale of how a young idealist and a middle-aged mother view one another, and (since they are the same person) how they come together to decide who they will be. This book is also timely, narrated by a girl who must consider what she has gleaned from the conservative conversations of her childhood and her liberal learnings as an activist adult. As the political world becomes increasingly polarized, she observes friends and family in both camps—and realizes she has something to say to them all.
Finally, this book is a story—full of characters who charm as they challenge. Both their antics and their ideas impact a narrator as she chooses her path. Meet a homeless veteran, a kick-ass exterminator, a spicy senior citizen, and a Nigerian rainmaker—and discover how one woman learned to respect every voice, while on a journey to discover her own.
